Fiddlers of all ages are welcome to enter the Sandwich Fair
Fiddle contest on Wednesday evening at 6:00pm. The contest will take place at
the Sandwich fairgrounds near the livestock area on the Ag Land stage. The
contest is free with the purchase of a fair ticket. The contest is considered to
be traditional fiddle music as opposed to classical, jazz, pop, rock, etc.
Traditional styles include Irish, French, Cajun, other National/Ethnic styles,
Country, Bluegrass, etc. The contest will be held rain or shine. There is a
covered stage for the performers. The contest will begin with the youngest
division. The prizes will be awarded at the end of each division. The division

General Regulations:
1. Due to a limited number of entries, advance registration ensures
participation in the contest. Rules and entry forms may be downloaded at
www.sandwichfair.com/fiddle_contest.htm, and pre-registration may be made by
phone at 815.786.9313.
2. Those who have not pre-registered may do so up to 5:30pm on the day of the
contest if openings are still available.
3. Contestants must sign in and register by 5:30pm on the day of the contest.
Contestants will receive their number (which is the same as their performing
position number) at the time of registration. Senior division contestants who
are unable to sign in by 5:30 should make prior arrangements with the
superintendent and be pre-registered with their completed registration in the
possession of the superintendent.
4. Contestants must be at the site and ready to play fifteen (15) minutes prior
to their division, and if not present when their number is called, that
contestant will be scratched.
5. Contestants are expected to perform two (2) tunes: a waltz (any tune in ¾
time) and a hoedown (any fast tune in 2/4 or 4/4 time, such as a reel, fast
hornpipe, breakdown, or similar tune) in that order. There will be no medleys
and the maximum time limit for the combined total of the two tunes is six (6)
minutes.
6. No special effects or “Trick & Fancy” fiddling are permitted. Tunes such as:
“Listen To the Mockingbird,” “Orange Blossom Special,” “Bile Them Cabbage,” or
“Black Mountain Rag” are not permitted.
7. No sheet music shall be displayed in the contest area.
8. Up to two accompanying instrumentalists will be allowed, such as bass and/or
guitar. The back up accompanists may not play melody or close harmony and may
not play another fiddle.
9. In case of a tie, there will be a one tune play-off.
10. In case of an accident beyond the control of the fiddler, at the discretion
of the judges, the tune may be repeated or restarted.
11. The judges’ decisions are final.
